4) INITIAL TARGET AUDIENCE

TARGET AUDIENCE

Now that I know my product is going to be Horror/Thriller genres, I know what my target audience will be very specifically. From researching and learning about the Horror and Thriller genres I compiled a list of what my target audience will be like.

OVERVIEW: Mainly younger generation (Ages 18-25) Specifically outgoing and lively people who like to experience adrenaline through fear. Its natural for us to seek adrenaline rush...

  • Dominant male gender. Male viewers will follow the two main characters which are male, inspired by them and relate to them. Males could possibly bring their partners along broadening target audience. Stereotypically males like more action, in this case violence, swearing, weapons and shocks.
  • Students. College, part time jobs, nightclubs, TV, music, curious, daring, fast food – Typical student lives.
  • Mainly ages 18 to 25. The younger adult to lower middle-aged. 18 viewing certificate means only people 18 and over can watch film. Main audience will be the younger adult. Lively people are students.
  • Main stream. Fits with mainstream genres; Horror/Thriller, popular genres.
  • Working class/Lower middle social status. People who like to go to cinema regularly after college, on weekends, after work. (Students are classed as middle class)

This is what my target audience at the current time. I will be doing research into my target audience through qualitative and quantitative research, (questionnaires and focus groups) which means my target audience could change depending on what the viewers want and like. If my target audience is accurate it will not change much.

3) GENRE PROJECT

MY CHOSEN GENRE

FOR MY FILM TEASER TRAILER, POSTER, AND WEBSITE HOMEPAGE PRODUCTS - MY CHOSEN GENRE WOULD BE HORROR/THRILLER. THIS MEANS I WOULD HAVE TO STUDY BOTH GENRES...

Background Information...

In film theory, a genre refers to the primary method of categorisation. A 'genre' generally refers to the films that share similarities in the narrative elements from which they are constructed.

For example: The objective of a horror film is to scare the audeince via the characters actions and the narrative told. Audiences are supposed to experience that frightened feeling after watching a horror movie. Similar emotions and feelings occur with thrillers as well.

Genre is fundamental to communication. Genre makes information more controllable and more rule-bound. Its genre that makes characters predictable and therefore transforming the world into something more controllable. In other words, it offers imaginary solutions to real problems; one of the reasons films are so entertaining for people.

IN FILM, GENRES ARE STRUCTURES USED BY FILM-MAKERS AND AUDIENCE FOR CREATING MEANING.

To construct a film within a genre, specific selections need to be made...

HORROR: Paranormal acitivty, scary creatures, ghosts and goolies
THRILLER: Violence, death, serial Killer, sharp weapons, grunge
WESTERN: Saloon, guns, horses
SCI-FI: Space-ships, robots, laser guns
GANGSTER: Black suits, speakeasy, the moll

These paradigms are iconographical. They signify meanings.

THE HORROR GENRE

Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. Horror films usually center on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event. Many Horror films include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. Traditionally, Horror films incorporate a large amount of violence and gore into the plot. Though it has its own style, Horror film often overlaps into Fantasy, Thriller, and Science-Fiction genres. Most Horror texts are released in late October for the halloween period to attract more viewers and suit the occasion.

Brief background:

  • Consistently popular since the 1930s - attracts predominantly youth audiences
  • Thematic preoccupation: Can reflect moral fears in society and reflect changes in attitudes
  • Repertoire expanded through the development of specific cycles
  • Specific studio’s associated with genre developments: Pinewood and Hammer Horror

In HOLLYWOOD, one of the most popular cycles of horror films of the 1990's began with Scream (1996)Click here to see Scream Trailer.

...and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)Click here to see I Know What You Did Last Summer Trailer.

This cycle involved a reworking of earlier films in which young people were terrorized by a ‘slasher’, eventually cornered by the ‘final girl’. This is very similar to what my film will be about therefore it is safe to say the Horror genre suits my plot, although my film will be slightly different but thats where it is unique!

The cycle was that successful it led to a number of sequels and exploited further with a ‘spoof’, Scary MovieBy 2000, the Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis and described as a ‘ghost story with a twist’, was a massive worldwide hit.
This was followed by Unbreakable, The Others and The Ring. Within the space of a few years the Horror genre had produced its variants from slasher-horror to ghost.

Since the mid 1990's the Horror genre had the status of being a
high budget, mainstream genre. This is where my mainstream target audience comes into it which is shown in my next post.

HORROR GENRE AND AUDIENCE

This is the Audiences understanding of the Horror text and what it mainly entails.

•Expectations and predictability

•Repetition and variation
•Horror movies aim to scare and provide horrific experiences
•Plays on our emotions, nerves and fears
•Pleasure of the text
•Ideological implications
•Fandom
•Popular culture
•Narrative pleasure

•Taboo feelings

The horror text it seems is consistently testing the implications of the behaviour of humankind, the impact of late industrial capitalism, the effects of historical determinism and the enduring influence of the need to preserve some notion of moral order, social value and consensual justice. It is keep changing. Rob McInnes argues that it is nonsense to claim that genres possess clear, stable and identifiable boundaries. This challenges many of the assumptions that are held about how a given genre works and this is what allows me to twist and change what happens in my Horror film story. I do not have to stick to the 'rules' although I don't want to stray too far away from them.

We should acknowledge that a genre’s supposed features will depend on the audiences own understanding and viewing histories, and that audiences will think about genres differently from critics, academics, film makers or
marketing departments.

THE THRILLER GENRE

Thriller Film is a genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. No matter what sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, it will emphasise the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the film and leads to a highly stressful climax.

The Horror and Thriller genres are very similar in what they affect the audience with and I know that they are commonly put together with real films. I decided to put those together because with just the Horror genre it seemed like there was gaps in the genre in relation to what my story entails. For example - I knew my story would have a killer and be revolved around violence suggesting 'Thriller' to me. But I still wanted to give those 'Horrific' effects and spookiness of the Horror genre. Horror is going to be my main genre and focused on making it like that of the 1990's Horror genre cycle.

2) STARTING POINTS 2

FIRST IDEAS

Now, I had to think of a base for my film, these decisions were in the first planning stages. I had to think of: the style, target audience, title and synopsis for my product to get me started. Here is what I come up with...

This was my planning for initial ideas^

I wanted to create product which concentrates on one specific location, whether it be a house, hotel, or room - somewhere eerie and spooky. So I started to think...

A lot of ideas passed through my mind and eventually I settled upon basing my film around a hotel location. A typical location for terrifying paranormal occurrences.

More specifically I wanted to base my moving image on activity in one room, therefore it would make sense to name my product after this... BLACK ROOM. Shortly after naming I decided to change the film title to DARK ROOM. The reason behind this was because I was looking for synonyms for the word 'black'. After saying some of those words along with 'room', 'Dark' felt right and more subtle adding mystery behind the meaning of my title.

My ideas were then clarified by looking at other films similar to mine for inspiration and to spur ideas. >>>

When I got to this point my ideas started to change.

The setting would be the same: A specific spooky and weary location what is haunted, my target audience would remain the same, but my genre, title and story of my film would change slightly. My genre would change to Horror/Thriller.

My genre changed because my story did...
New Story: 'A story following two young men (A writer, and a College student) who go to a haunted hotel because the student needs to attend work experience to work towards his ultimate goal of being a writer as well. The writer accepts the students application and decides to undergo a trip to a haunted hotel to find inspiration and write his book from experiences while learning the student the theories of paranormal activity.'

Instead of basing my film around paranormal activity (which the characters are hoping to experience), I decided to base my film around a killer. A stereotypical serial killer who feels no regret and is very hard to kill. Therefore my genre changes to horror and thriller. The horror element is still going to be there since the film will be horrifying, spooky things occurring. But thriller as well because people are going to get hunted down, and killed, one by one. Thriller also ties in very well with the horror genre.

I decided to change my story and genre because I thought that this would be more realistic for the viewer to experience. You would be able to relate to a story following a serial killer because unfortunately they are real. Making my film more frightening for the audience, it will allow me to play with the viewers imagination by using realism  It is also relevant that the killer will be able to isolate and trap his victims in the haunted hotel. So 'there is no escape.'

My title would change also...
New Title: ZERO HOUR

My title would change from 'Dark Room' to 'Zero Hour' because my film is now about a killer and it would not be sensible to base the film around one room because that seriously limits where the killer can go. It will be based around the whole hotel giving the murderer a chance to chase and frighten his victims.

It is now called 'Zero Hour' because that is midnight (00:00). A stereotype can be driven from this; all bad things start to happen at midnight. When the sun goes down it gets dark and darkness is a instinctively frightening element for humans. It will give the viewer a chance to wonder what the title is about, it entails mystery which adds to the frightening element.

These changes mean that I needed to add some more inspirational texts that would fit in with HORROR and THRILLER...

?

I had created a mood board to explore ideas and see if those mood board images made me think of any new ideas...
