5) INSTITUTION RESEARCH AND MY OWN

INSTITUTION RESEARCH

^Mood-board examples of large film companies^

BELOW ARE FILM COMPANIES WHAT I THINK ARE APPROPRIATE TO MY PRODUCT AND WOULD BE WILLING TO WORK WITH A HORROR/THRILLER FILM, AND A TRAILER. THE REASON I AM DOING THIS IS TO GATHER AN UNDERSTANDING FOR FILM COMPANIES AND THEIR LOGOS SO I WILL BE ABLE TO CONFIDENTLY CREATE MY OWN COMPANIES TO FEATURE IN MY TRAILER.

PARAMOUNT

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film and television production/distribution company, consistently ranked as one of the largest (top-grossing) movie studios. It is a division of American media conglomerate Viacom.
The company dates its beginnings to the 1912 founding date of the Famous Players Film Company, one of the companies that merged into Paramount Pictures (then known as Famous Players-Lasky Corporation) in 1916. Paramount is the fourth oldest existing film studio in the world behind Universal Studios, Pathé and Gaumont Pictures. Also, it is the last major film studio still headquartered in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.
Paramount Pictures is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

WHY I CHOSE:

I chose to study Paramount because they have produced some very good horror films that are in ways, similar to my product. Films such as the ‘Paranormal Activity movies’, ‘Friday 13th’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and ‘Shutter Island’. A film company like this could work with a film like mine and produce a trailer for it.

LIONSGATE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation or Lionsgate is a North American entertainment company. The company was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 3, 1997, and is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. As of 2012, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television Distribution Company in North America and the sixth most profitable movie studio.

WHY I CHOSE:

Lionsgate have some very popular horror and thriller movies such as ‘Alone In the Dark’, ‘Cannibal’, the ‘Saw’ movies, the more modern ‘Frankenstein’, the ‘Scream’ films and the ‘Scary Movie’ films. Even though Scary Movie is a comedy, I just mentioned them to show how Lionsgate have been successful and have experience in the horror genre.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc., also known as Warner Bros. Pictures or simply Warner Bros. (though the name was occasionally given in full form as Warner Brothers during the company's early years), is an American producer of film, television, and music entertainment.
One of the major film studios, it is a subsidiary of Time Warner, with its headquarters in Burbank, California and New York. Warner Bros. has several subsidiary companies, including Warner Bros. Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Animation, Warner Home Video, New Line Cinema, TheWB.com, and DC Entertainment. Warner owns half of The CW Television Network.
Warner Bros. is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

WHY I CHOSE:

Warner Bros. have produced films such as ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘The Exorcist’, the ‘Final Destination’ films and ‘The Chernobyl Diaries’. I think this company would be least likely to produce my product since it is most experienced in making movies for a broad range of ages instead of just restricting to 18 and over, which horror and most thriller movies are.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Universal Studios (also known as Universal Pictures), is an American motion picture studio, owned by Comcast, and one of the six major movie studios. It is one of the longest-lived motion picture studios to be located outside of Hollywood.[1] It is a division of American media conglomerate NBCUniversal.
Founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, and Jules Brulatour, it is the oldest movie studio in the United States of America. It is also the third oldest in the world that is still in continuous production; the first being Gaumont Pictures, the second oldest is Pathé and the fourth oldest is Paramount Pictures. On May 11, 2004, the controlling stake in the company was sold by Vivendi Universal to General Electric, parent of NBC. The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBC Universal, while Universal Studios Inc. remained the name of the production subsidiary. In addition to owning a sizable film library spanning the earliest decades of cinema to more contemporary works, it also owns a sizable collection of TV shows through its subsidiary NBCUniversal Television Distribution. It also acquired rights to several prominent filmmakers' works originally released by other studios through its subsidiaries over the years. Selected clips and footage shot by Universal Studios are available for purchase from the NBCUniversal Archives.
Its production studios are at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California. Distribution and other corporate offices are in New York City.
Universal Studios is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

WHY I CHOSE:

Universal has produced some of the best horror classics and some of the very first popular horror movies such as ‘Dracula’, the original ‘Frankenstein’, ‘The Thing’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Psycho’, ‘The Wolf Man’ and ‘King Kong’. From this experience I think Universal Studios will be most likely to produce my product.

After researching existing film companies I need to create my own to feature in my trailer…

I am aware of that there are specifically film distribution and production companies that create and distribute films. So in response to my knowledge I am creating my own as well as a large international company as these are needed in order to produce, distribute and a sell the product.

After knowing that most smaller subsidiaries and divisions have logos that remain as stills I will create a STILL logo for my PRODUCTION company and DISTRIBUTION company. Whereas for my INTERNATIONAL company, this will have an ANIMATED logo like most existing ones do. The logos I create will be featured in my trailer.

So along with institution logos I will be creating:

A film INTERNATIONAL company (like paramount)
A film PRODUCTION company (as a subsidiary of larger)
film DISTRIBUTION company (as a subsidiary of larger)
