33) POST MODERNISM AND MY PRODUCT

POST MODERNISM

Below are my notes on some background of Modernism, and notes all about Post-Modernism. I felt like my notes took in class explained enough of what I learnt all together about post modernism.

The notes were based on the film Pulp Fiction as this is a perfect examples of a post modern text.

I thought that out of the theories I had studied, this was the least relevant to my product and subverted most of it. But this is important so here are the reasons why I felt this way...

INTERTEXTUALITY

My product only makes reference to one real life text and that is emphasising the name of the hotel the 'Jamaica Inn'. This is not for the purpose of making it post modern though. It is to reinforce the knowledge that the hotel is haunted to the audience.

MIXING GENRES

My trailer does not mix a number of genres playfully. It sticks to two genres which are very similar - Horror and Thriller. Throughout the product it gives horror and thriller conventions unlike post modern where there are 4 or 5 distinct genres.

MIXING HIGH AND LOW CULTURE

It does not mix elements of high and low culture. All of the way through it neither focuses on purely high, or low culture. The same culture is represented continuously. Working class, and a student going to a hotel for work experience.

ATTENTION TO CONSTRUCTION

The trailer will be constructed like a trailer with normal conventions - Start being slow and building up tension from there with fast paced snippets and clips designed to reveal information and keep the audience guessing as to what happens in the film. It will not be jumbled up unlike post modern texts where sometimes the start of the film appears at the end, and the credits appear at the start.

FRAGMENTATION

The story, location, era, and viewpoint is fragmented or distorted. It has a clear  story with interesting characters and the audience will be aware where the characters are all the time. But not too clear because my trailer is only supposed to give clues!

NOTICING UNUSUAL CONVENTIONS

My approach to the trailer will not be 'in your face' and very bold. Some features are designed to be subtle so that totally subverts the boisterous view. There will be nothing unusual, a typical trailer.

IRONY ABOUT SERIOUS ISSUES

My trailer is based on quite a serious issue and remains that way all the way through, it has no ironic elements of comedy in it. After all it is about a killer hunting down his victims one by one for no other reason than pleasure.

STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE

Both are balanced in my product. Style is very important because it needs to look aesthetically pleasing and realistic and the story behind it is important as well to provide a good connection to characters and the plot.
